What is a “First Look” and why should someone choose it?
First Look is a moment between the bride and groom where they get to see each other for the first time on their wedding day. In the traditional wedding sense this moment happens as the bride walks into the church or ceremony location and begins to walk down the aisle. But as wedding photography changes and becomes more documentary and photojournalistic and more emphasis is placed on wedding photos, more and more couples are opting for a more intimate first look. I couldn’t be happier! While I respect those couples that want to be traditional and wait to see each other until the ceremony, I love it when they choose to have a First Look, see each other before and take photos before.
There are so many reasons why I love this choice!
If a couple decides to see each other before the ceremony, I always recommend we set up the First Look moment for them. There are many ways to do it, you could have your bridal party or close family, but in most cases it is just the couple-and of course the photographers to capture the moment.
Katie and Mike were married in the hedge garden at the Morton Arboretum on July 11. They choose to take photos before hand so we could have some fun around the Arboretum’s beautiful grounds before the ceremony. And then afterwards they were free to enjoy their reception and spend more time with their guests.
We set up a First look for them in a quiet secluded garden. Mike patiently waited on a bench with his back to the tree lined path as Katie walked up. Here are my favorite photos of their First Look. I kept my distance so I didn’t hear what was said, but by the looks on their faces, I am sure Mike said how beautiful Katie looked and they both expressed their deep love for each other which everyone could feel throughout the day.
Here’s one of the main reasons I love the first look choice, because not only do you get to talk to each other privately, without all your guests watching, but you also get to be right next to each other the moment you see each other, so you can hug and kiss.
Here is my favorite. This just shows the emotion, the happiness and excitement of the day. This is what First Looks are all about, capturing in one frame that reaction and that special moment when two people so much in love see each other all dressed up and it sinks in that today is their wedding and one of the happiest days of their life.
Thank you Katie and Mike for allowing me to share this moment and your special day with you! Here’s your first look.
I will share a full post with more wedding photos soon!
